I always assumed that it had the same origin as the -l at the end of
Bristol (originally Bristow), due to the inclination of West Country folk
to put an l at the end of words.
I recently heard that some Somerset folk call an Aga (a type of huge
farmhouse boiler-cum-oven) an "Agal", so evidently this feature of the
dialect is still productive.
